Sexual Dysfunction in Men

Sexual Dysfunction in Men

At which stages can sexual dysfunction occur in men?

  • Sexual desire

  • Arousal-erection

  • Ejaculation

  • Orgasm

When and under which conditions should sexual dysfunction be considered?

  • Reduced or absent sexual interest and desire towards the partner

  • If arousal and erection (hardening of the sexual organ) do not occur during sexual intercourse despite interest and desire

  • If the erection cannot be maintained long enough during sexual intercourse

  • If ejaculation occurs sooner than expected and desired

How common is sexual dysfunction in men?

  • The most common sexual dysfunction in men is related to erection. Studies conducted worldwide show that approximately 55% of men aged 40-70 have mild, moderate or severe erectile dysfunction.

  • Loss of sexual desire is seen in 15% of adult men and in 30% of men over the age of 50.

  • Premature ejaculation is seen in 30% of men. 10% of men intermittently experience an inability to ejaculate or delayed ejaculation…

  • Delayed ejaculation and the inability to reach orgasm are less common than the other problems. They usually occur in middle age, and one in 10 men faces this problem.

What causes sexual dysfunction in men?

The causes of sexual dysfunction are usually psychological, relationship-related or illness-related factors. Performance anxiety is the most important consequence of psychological factors or, depending on the situation, their cause. Physical causes are usually identified in only a small proportion of patients. The most common of these is medication side effects. Other common physical causes are diabetes, vascular diseases, smoking, alcohol or drug abuse, endocrine (hormonal) diseases and neurological diseases.

Who should be consulted first about sexual dysfunction?

For the initial assessment, a urology specialist experienced in sexual dysfunction or a psychiatrist should be consulted first. The initial assessment is very important for distinguishing whether the problem is psychological, relationship-related, situational or physical in origin.
